Caitlin Albritton (b. 1989) Gray Drape, 2015 oil paint on panel 12 x 12 in. Gift of the artist, 2019.6.1 By transforming an initially flat surface into a dimensional collage of textural topography, Catilin Albritton questions the long-term effects of an image saturated and technologically based society. To create artworks like Grey Drape, the artist spreads layers upon layers of paint onto the surface of the canvas or panel, and then scrapes or peels the paint up from the surface to sculpt the layers into three-dimensional forms. In stark contrast to digitally-based experiences, the resulting textural configurations invite viewers to consider images in a tactile and physical way—much more akin to our lived experience in the world, which is full of depth, tactility, and diversity. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
