Suzanne Camp Crosby's work is often lively and humorous. She was an expert at directing thematic photographs by adding unexpected objects or people to everyday scenery. In Moving, a blue house sits atop a trailer attached to a red truck. What on first glance appears to be an idyllic scene suggesting freedom of movement and new beginnings becomes ironic when one notices that the truck is in disrepair and likely cannot tow the house, which is itself also visibly run down. A child and a dog on the house’s porch invite us to contemplate the bustling family life this home might support until we realize they are both mannequins, and, like the other objects in frame, also incapable of actually “moving.”
Suzanne Camp Crosby had a prolific and long-lasting career, with numerous exhibitions both locally and nationally. She taught at HCC for over 35 years and played an instrumental role in the development of the photography program at the Ybor City Campus before she retired in 2015.
This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
