Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz (b. 1973) Nature Queen 25, 2021 archival inkjet print 45 x 30 in. Gift of the artist, 2022.8.2 Interdisciplinary artist Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz maintains strong connections to her Afro-Latinx family in Mayagüez and Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Her work draws from the legacy of performance art while exploring aspects of her own identity and centering the experience of BIPOC communities. Similar to her live performances, the Nature Queen series positions the artist’s own body as subject, providing viewers with the opportunity to consider themes such as identity, the diasporic experience and healing. The artist’s wig visually mirrors the naturally occurring shapes found in the flourishing plant life surrounding her body, while it is composed of materials that celebrate craft and the experience of women of color. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
