Dominique Labauvie (b. 1948, France) Warm Up, 2020 steel maquette 6.5 x 35.5 x 8 in. Gift of Bleu Acier Inc., 2023.10.1 Warm Up is a maquette made in preparation for a solo exhibition at HCC in fall 2020. Using this maquette as a reference, the resulting site-specific sculpture spanned the entire width of the gallery. Labauvie’s rigid, yet lyrical lines remind the viewer of the gallery space’s own role as an instrument for artists—a vessel for play and practice as well as a tool for showcasing finished work. The exhibition, titled Warm Up: In Tandem, included prints and musical performances meant to work in concert with the sculpture. According to Labauvie: “The sound is a horizontal propagation in space; it goes straight towards its target and its target answers back. This is the tandem. The line of steel, or the line of sound: the same. They collaborate with each other between stability and movement.” This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
