Marsh’s paintings of street scenes like College Avenue often present a complex, yet stunning, view of the relationship between the natural world and urban environments. In part, these street paintings pay homage to the charm of stretches of small-town Florida roads many may overlook as quotidian. However, the sky, as in College Avenue, looms large, occupying nearly two-thirds of the composition and casting a blue-gray hue over the entire scene. A quaint intersection becomes the stage for a menacing dance of rain clouds, and, at once, the beauty and expanse of the Floridian environment many encounter on a daily basis is brought to the fore.
