To create Como Carbón, Edgar Sánchez Cumbas first recycled old paintings into charcoal briquettes of various flesh tones. The material transformation from painted object to briquette acts as a metaphor for today’s changing Floridian culture, caught between the forces of the conservative old South and a new era of multiculturalism. The collograph print is formed through impressions of these briquettes onto paper. The conversion from old paintings, to briquettes, to the final print implies a parallel between the process of art making and the shifting nature of the contemporary world.
