Plant Museum Dolls, c. 2000–2005
cibachrome print
31 x 27 in.
Gift of the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, made possible by Johnnie O. Crosby and Family.
Commissioned by the City of Tampa, FL, Public Art Program, 2004 BIG Picture Project.
In 2004, Suzanne Camp Crosby was selected as that year’s Tampa Photographer Laureate. Camp Crosby’s images combine her unique point of view as an artist and resident, documenting scenes from shops, highways and skyscrapers to iconic Tampa landmarks such as Amelie Arena, the Gasparilla ship, Ybor City, and Bayshore Boulevard. In this scene, Camp Crosby captures the exterior of the Plant Museum, originally built in 1891 by Henry B. Plant as the Tampa Bay Hotel. Here, the recognizable veranda is filled with paper cutouts of Victorian-era figures, somewhat humorously conflating the location’s past with its contemporary history.
This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
