Gift of the artist, 2022.8.4
Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz situates her body within a tropical southern landscape for her Nature Queen series, utilizing portraiture and performance to reclaim space for healing and serenity amidst the tumult of political instability and a worldwide pandemic. Visually echoing her Wig Variant sculptures, the artist wears wigs constructed with materials celebrating craft and the experience of women of color. The use of costuming, body language and gaze create an atmosphere of sanctuary and reflection, in which the artist appears radiant, powerful and at peace in her environment.
