In Dunes I, Kathy Wright captures a moment of meteorological unease with a sophisticated command of a limited palette of blues, grays, and whites. Impressionist in nature, Wright’s loose, yet deliberate, brush strokes allude to the movement of a looming storm cloud and the misty flow of sand through harsh gusts of wind. Abrupt shifts in the direction of Wright’s marks appear to underscore the volatility of the scene depicted, as well as remind us of our vulnerability to the whims of natural phenomena.
