Carolyn Kossar (1949 - 2020) Key Sunset I, 2007 fiber collage, raw canvas, paper, beads, cotton wrap 12 x 15 in. Gift of Maryann Scyocurka, Sister, from the Estate of Carolyn S. Kossar, 2022.1.6 Carolyn Kossar frequently utilizes everyday items to create abstract, three-dimensional compositions that recall different locations and seasons. In Key Sunset I, the use of horizontal lines typically signifies a sense of serenity, and the tightly wound folds of canvas can be interpreted as waves on the beach. The introduction of beads into the piece interrupts the flow while establishing new textures and colors to the composition. These elements may suggest the popular activity in the Florida Keys of combing the beach for shells and sea glass, while the colors recall the warmth of the sunset on the horizon. Kossar was HCC’s Gallery Director for 20 years and was incredibly active within the Tampa community. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
