Nike D. Okundaye (b. 1951) Fisherwomen on a river in the forest, date unknown fiber, African Batik 56 ¼ x 52 ¼ in. Purchase, 2021.19.1 Nike D. Okundaye’s understanding of art was passed down to her by her great grandmother, late madam Ibikunle who was an "Adire" textile maker and a dyer of fabric in the village of Ogidi-Ijumu, Nike's birthplace. Nike steadily built upon her great grandmother’s teachings and developed her own style in textile design and painting. This play of tradition and innovation is seen in Fisherwomen on a river in the forest, a colorful fiber work that draws upon Nike’s “Adire” background. Nike has economically and socially empowered many rural women by setting up cottage weaving workshops/centers for women at Abuja, Osogbo and Ogidi-Ijumu thereby giving them voices in their various communities and continuing her great-grandmother’s legacy of teaching. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
