Gift of the HCC Dale Mabry Campus Student Government Association, 2015.2.1 From her Momochidori Series, Grosbeak is one of five works made in response to the prints and poems found in master Japanese woodblock printer Kitagawa Utamaro’s illustrated anthology, Momo Chidori Kyōka-awase (Myriad Birds: A Playful Poetry Contest) from the Edo-period (1615-1868). Combining elements reminiscent of traditional Japanese printmaking, like flat color and intricate linework, with delicate washes of blue and red, Nogami re-interprets a poem by Akera Kankô: "Irazaru kuchi no mamemawashi tsui saezurite na ya morasuramu” "My love affair is secret, but the 'bean-turner' bird, with it's big mouth no doubt spilled the beans and squealed her name.”
