Bassmi Ibrahim (1941-2019)
Isness #120, 2015
oil painting
60 x 48 in.
Gift of the artist, 2018.3.1
Bassmi Ibrahim’s paintings are concerned with the physical, the spiritual, the mental and the emotional self. Ibrahim chose abstract painting to give him access to a space beyond words. According to Ibrahim, “Rather than representing the outer shape of the world, these paintings express the fluid dynamism of all life.” His Isness paintings, begun in 2005, are inspired by the intrinsic reality of all experience, expressed through luminescent petals and flows of oil and acrylic paint. The resulting images—such as the pools of red-violet paint that flow across the surface of Isness #25—are meant to recreate the colors, forms and sensations experienced during meditation.
