Akiko Kotani, in her own words, is “attracted to the refinement of simple techniques that direct [her] work toward an economy of means, which generates a concentrated power within the work.” This economy of means is on display in Mid Winter #1, a gestural abstract painting completed utilizing only black ink on white paper. Fine brush lines and bold moments of pure black call to mind the simple elegance of calligraphic strokes. The stark contrast between the ink and the paper invites a consideration of positive and negative spaces as well.
