Donne Bitner’s Off the Top of my Head combines painting, drawing, and relief carving to create an imaginative scene. On the left, a large yet ambiguous figure in red stares into the distance on a hazy field of orange and blue hues. Meanwhile, several white silhouettes seemingly spring from the top of the subject’s head, implying ideas or memories that literally spring out from the mind. The unique combination of abstract and surreal imagery invites viewers to consider a narrative in which the various symbols, such a crow and the number five, may mean to them.
Donne Bitner, an art graduate from Penn State and full-time studio artist, currently instructs painting and other forms at Crealde School of Art. Her work is exhibited at museums and art festivals throughout the United States.
