Scott Owen Pierce’s Schematic Sky Memory proffers a spectacular image of overlapping clouds. The scene recalls the childlike nostalgia of sky gazing—yet, the image is a deceptively complex illusion. To produce Schematic Sky Memory, Pierce first photographed the sky in a quick series of consecutive images using a methodically timed rhythm. The images were then loaded into a computer and merged together using algorithms in Adobe Photoshop to create the appearance of a single, wide-angle photograph.
Inspired in part by Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse Five and the way our minds blend together past experiences in order to recollect singular memories, the digital construction of Pierce’s photograph invites viewers to consider the boundaries of human perception. Pierce is a Tampa-based artist who attended the University of South Florida where he received his BFA in Studio Art in 2014, and his MFA in 2017.Label Type
