Rachel Stewart Seasons, 2015 wood relief sculpture 23 x 10.5 x 3 in. Gift of the artist, 2015.3.1 Deeply inspired by her time in Jamaica (where she lived and worked for 20 years), artist Rachel Stewart finds inspiration in the natural world. In the background of Seasons, cool hues and shallow diagonal lines in the top section suggest the rippling surface of water or a clear blue sky, dotted by three white silhouettes of birds in flight. In contrast, the lower portion is infused with warm tones and complex textures, perhaps alluding to the geological layers of the earth. In the center, a three-dimensional tree branch stands in quiet solitude, barren yet resolute in the foreground. The title Season suggests that each element alludes to the changes of the seasons, to the rhythms and natural cycles that indicate not only the passage of time but periods of change that occur throughout our lives. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
