Description

A portrait of a woman facing forward with her eyes looking downward. Only her face and neck are recognizable, while the rest her body blends in with the abstract back ground. With lose brush strokes and colors like yellow and purple dominating the color scheme, the painting shows a lot of depth and tension.

Stephen Schatz (b. 1943) Shaveeka, 1999 oil on canvas 22 x 18 in. Gift of the artist, 2018.2.2 Stephen Schatz’s work attempts to depict the multitude of feelings and sensations encountered in nature. Working directly from live models in his studio, each painting is meant to capture the mystery and drama of human existence. Inspired by artists such as Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, and Edvard Munch, his paintings often include loose, expressive brushstrokes paired with vivid colors. Schatz painted Shaveeka while he was an Associate Professor at Albany State University in Georgia. The loose application of brushstrokes and multiple layers of paint creates depth and tension, which hint at the physical and psychological presence of the model as perceived by the artist. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
