Josette Urso (b. 1959) Sorrento Grimaldi, 2010 watercolor 11 x 15 in. Gift of the artist in honor of Rosario and Connie Urso, 2012.5.1 Painted on location, Sorrento Grimaldi depicts a vista Urso encountered in the town of Sorrento, Italy. Reflecting her internal response to external surroundings, Urso intuitively shifts the scale, color, and perspective of the natural and urban elements in view. The result is not only a painted representation of that which is seen, but of that which is felt and experienced by the artist. Working in the direct presence of her subject, in this case a Sorrento port, Urso translates the excitement and energy she receives from exploring new spaces into free-form marks and saturated color. Making work while traveling, even at the hurried pace painting live subjects requires, affords the artist a measure of private time to reflect on the physical world and create a contemporaneous record of her exploration. This work of art is a part of the HCC Permanent Art Collection. The HCC Art Galleries, through their Campus Loan Outreach Program, seek to share original art by collecting a diversity of works for the education and enjoyment of the HCC Community.
