After joining the U.S. Army (3rd Armored Division), Lee began working as a photographer in 1965 for the Stars & Stripes newspaper. This led to a job as a photojournalist with Life magazine, and, over the next seven years, Lee would freelance for numerous magazines such as Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, and Rolling Stone, among others. After receiving a National Endowment for the Arts grant, he began the Artist Filmmaker in the Schools program in Tampa, FL. Lee became an influential and driving force in the Tampa art scene; founding the Artists and Writers Trust and the Florida Photographer's Workshop and co-founding the annual Artists and Writers Ball. Unable to continue his photography practice after a 2003 stroke, Lee began to paint and sketch. The energetic lines, bright colors, and hints of figures in this work suggest a playful yet restless approach to his art making.
