Gnarled limbs, fungi, cypress knees, and burl wood can all be found in Kate Alboreo’s Wrestling Boys, in which the abstracted plant life reacts and interacts with their surroundings. The forms found within the painting are informed by field drawings and photographs the artist captured while exploring the Tampa Bay area in search for what she calls “heroic” plant life: “I look for plants that have visibly adapted to their peculiar circumstances or have evolved extraordinarily over time, to survive the ever-changing conditions of the planet.” Through Alboreo’s painting process, her subjects take on a bolder, more toxic color scheme that heightens the drama of the tableau, while the anthropomorphic gestures of the abstracted flora suggests a shared human and botanical struggle against mortality.
