Original (August 2022) View of Alexander Farms Tenant House
Description
To many persons today, the J. Wilson Alexander Farm Tenant House was nothing more than a shabby eyesore. However, it is the last physical record of how most Mecklenburg farm families lived from the end of the Civil War until the Great Depression of the 1930s.
94% of Mecklenburg County land in 1910 was farmland. Most consisted of small family-owned cotton farms. A family who lived in the Alexander Farm Tenant Farmhouse included John Newman and his daughter Gaither. Both are buried in the nearby Caldwell Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
