Hardback book with dust jacket, and bookmark. Barrack Room Ballads are a series of songs and poems by Rudyard Kipling, dealing with the late-Victorian British Army and mostly written in a vernacular dialect. The series contains some of Kipling's best-known works, including the poems "Gunga Din", "Tommy", "Mandalay", and "Danny Deever", helping consolidate his early fame as a poet.
Relating to the war service of VX39172 Captain Newton John STEWART, a fitter and turner by trade, who was born in Footscray, Victoria, Australia in 1912. Captain Stewart served in the Permanent Military Forces (PMF) from 3/9/1929 - 15/12/1940, the AIF from 16/12/1940 - 30/6/1947 and Interim from 1/7/1947 - 11/8/1948.
During this period of service he was posted to the Middle East (Palestine) with the 2/4 Field Workshop from 1/9/1941 - 16/7/1942 and the Pacific (British North Borneo) with 2/64 Light Aid Detachment, AEME from 16/5/1945 - 19/12/1945.
Newton would request repatriation to Adelaide upon discharge, his wife and son having moved to Crystal Brook during his service, before later relocating to East Glenelg. Awarded the Pacific Star, 1939-45 War Medal and Australian Service Medal for service during WW2, Captain Newton John Stewart died on April 23, 1985, aged 73.Category
