Description

The kitbag consists of a long, brown, canvas cylinder closed at the bottom. The top has an internal canvas flap and eight brass grommets to allow a drawstring type rope (fitted on this item) to securely close the bag. A metal D-shaped hinged clasp to enable fitting of a padlock (see photo). A canvas loop is sewn to bottom edge of bag to enable rope to be passed through for bag to be slung on shoulder. The initials of the owner (see photo) are stencilled in black ink on the side of the bag, with a cloth identity tag (see photo) sewn on the opposite side, also marked in black ink.

Use

This kitbag was owned by S19958, Private Edward Verdun CARTER. Pte Carter enlisted at Torrens Hall, South Australia on August 7, 1940, at the age of 24. He served in the Northern Territory (7 military district), north of parallel 14.50 south latitude, in the Darwin area from 17/12/1941 until 25/5/1942. Carter was originally attached to the 27th Infantry Battalion (The South Australian Scottish Regiment), and upon demobilisation on February 12, 1947, was attached to 4 Australian Advanced Ammunition Depot in South Australia.
