Large Rising Sun badge

Name/Title

Large "Rising Sun" hat badge

Entry/Object ID

2023.1.16.1

Description

Australian Commonwealth Military Forces Rising Sun hat badge. This is the large version and has one split pin to attach to the upturned brim of a slouch hat. Made from copper, this badge shows very little discolouration. The crown on this badge is known as the Imperial State Crown, or King's Crown (KC), and this did not change until 1956, after Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952.

Use

The Rising Sun badge identified servicemen and servicewomen as belonging to the Australian Army. Australian Army Nursing Service sisters wore a silver badge, while servicemen wore bronze-coloured badges. While the design has changed since the Second World War, the badge is still worn by today’s servicemen and servicewomen.
