This certificate was awarded to Miss Ada Myrtle Swearse of Gladstone, South Australia, in recognition of her service during WW2 with the Fighting Forces Comforts Fund. The Hornsdale Unit raised funds and items for the men and women who were serving throughout the Second World War.
Ada may have been involved with the selling of badges, preparing Christmas hampers, knitting an assortment of clothing (which included socks, jumpers, mittens and balaclavas), fundraisers or events throughout her service with the Hornsdale unit, some 200km north of Adelaide
A newspaper article dated December 6 1941, reported that the total funds raised to date totalled
£ 196,341/14/5 (including Christmas hampers funds for £ 11, 377/13/9). In 2025, this amount is the equivalent of $19,457,849.57.
Just 4 years later, an article in The Advertiser, dated November 27 1945, provided an incredible total raised by the FFCF in South Australia: £740,043/1/7 ($65,272,351.17) - an incredible fundraising effort by the public of South Australia during a time of rationing and war.
