Tea and butter ration card. "S" No. 214366 (the "S" indicates this was distributed for South Australian use), issued by the Commonwealth of Australia and dated 1949. Name of person to whom issued is written in green ink. This card has been used in full, there are no remaining stamps.

Use

Rationing regulations for food and clothing were gazetted in Australia on 14 May 1942. Rationing was introduced to manage shortages and control civilian consumption. It was enforced by the use of coupons and was limited to clothing, tea, sugar, butter, and meat. The ration of butter (1 lb per fortnight) was gazetted on 7 June 1943 and abolished June 1950 and tea (1/2 lb per 5 weeks) on 3 July 1942 and abolished in July 1950.

Notes

Ration cards were re-issued throughout this period to prevent forgery. The public was notified via the newspaper of re-issue dates. Presentation of old cards was required to be issued with new ones.
