Description

Clothing ration card. "S" 6264 (the "S" indicates this was distributed for South Australian use), issued by the Commonwealth of Australia and dated 1947. Name of person to whom issued is written in black ink. This card has 18 remaining stamps.

Use

Rationing regulations for food and clothing were gazetted in Australia on 14 May 1942. Rationing was introduced to manage shortages and control civilian consumption. It was enforced by the use of coupons and was limited to clothing, tea, sugar, butter, and meat. The ration of clothing was gazetted on 12 June 1942 and abolished June 1948. Adults were allowed 112 coupons per year.

Ration cards were re-issued throughout this period to prevent forgery. The public was notified via the newspaper of re-issue dates. Presentation of old cards was required to be issued with new ones.
