Produced by the Lithgow Small Arms Factory, approximately 220,000 Australian L1A1were produced between 1959 and 1986.
The SLR was the standard weapon issued to Australian infantrymen during the Vietnam War, with most Australian soldiers preferring this larger calibre weapon over the American M16. This was due to the SLR being substantially more reliable and with its more powerful NATO 7.62 round, it could be trusted to kill an enemy soldier outright.Category
