FOREWORD.
This pocket book was first compiled in Victoria under the auspices of the Victorian R.S.L. War Service Fund, which has since been affiliated with the Victorian Division of The Australian Comforts Fund. By courtesy of the R.S.L. War Service Fund, The Australian Comforts Fund for the whole of the Commonwealth is responsible for this present edition.
The notes have been compiled by men who have first hand knowledge of the requirements of war service. Those which deal with matters of a military character the A.C.F. hopes you will find useful. Those relating to such subjects as health, personal cleanliness, conduct, etc., have been included to suggest to you to be on your guard against avoidable trouble and the inevitable pitfalls which are in the way.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed, and the A.C.F. would have you know that the dangers which active service entails are not all on the front line.
Beware of indulging a habit of coarse speech ; in the words of the writer of last century, "Mend your speech lest it mar your fortune." The A.C.F. would impress upon you the desirability of learning all you can of other lands and peoples, so that when you return you will be a better citizen because of your greater knowledge ; in other words, employ your leisure properly.
Wherever you go, remember that Australia's honour is in your keeping. Equally important as your prowess as a soldier will be your behaviour as a man. Your Homeland will be judged largely on how you play the game.Book Details
