Description

A wooden router plane with a blade taken from a wooden plough plane.

Use

A type of plane made to scrape the bottom of a groove or recess to an even depth. It would be used after the bulk of the wood was taken out with a chisel.

Context

It isn't clear whether this plane was manufactured or home made. The marks on it are owners' stamps rather than company stamps. The iron is from a set that would have originally been supplied with an adjustable plough plane. The groove in the back was the location point for the plough plane's skate. The iron is quite thick, very suitable for this application, so the plane might have been built around this iron by an owner, or it might be a replacement. It has clearly seen much use, and has been stamped by two or more separate owners. Despite the woodworm holes, the age, the wear, the dirt, and the hole in the end, it feels good in the hand.
