The Saanich SchoolhouseDescription
This two room school constructed in 1912 by Mr. Tubman, was origionally on Mount Newton Cross Road. Two teachers taught 35 children from grades 1 through 8. Because the children were needed to work the farms, they were often absent from school and records show that the average attendance was only 22 students. Subjects taught included: reading, writing, arithmetic, composition, drawing, geography, Canadian and British history, grammar, literature, physical education, hygiene, and manual training.
One of seven similar school buildings in the Saanich School District, this last one standing was purchased for $1.00 by the Saanich Historical Artifacts Society, moved to its present location and restored with the financial help of BC Heritage trust and Brentwood Bay Rotary Club. Originally heated with wood stoves, it has been updated and the large East room, together with the middle teacher's room , now a modern kitchen, can be reserved for meetings, workshops and parties.
The basement is large and is used for storing artifacts. The storing and recording of artifacts is under the control of Michelle.
