This is a portable electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG); a machine that essentially prints out a visual representation of a person’s heartbeat. Electrocardiography refers to the process of recording the electrical activity of the heart. This particular machine was made in the 1950s specifically for the Lady Minto Hospital which was a small facility on Saltspring Island which opened in 1914 with 6 patients. Lady Minto was the wife of the eighth Governor General of Canada. She had a particular interest in rural health issues and forty six Lady Minto hospitals were opened across Canada, only three now emain open including the facility on Saltspring Island.
