Helen Porter Mitchell, better known as Nellie Melba, (later Dame Nellie Melba) was the premier female opera singer in the world in the early 20th century. Initially was reluctant to place her name on to recordings which she felt were inferior reproductions of her voice. Between 1902-1908 she recorded (often in secret) with Victor and Edison. This is one of the recordings which she gave permission to publish, but not to place her name on. It was only later Victor records which she gave that honour to.
