Description

Site #14 This building has a peaked roof. Built with all steel construction on a concrete foundation, the building is insulated throughout. It is mostly a concrete floor with one small section of gravel in the machinery storage end. Each end of this building has a 12' by 14' overhead door plus a people door beside. On the South wall and attached to the same so that it forms part of the main building is a shop area of 56' x 27' x 10' wall with a single pitched roof. This houses a workshop and repair facility and a machine shop. Each of these shops has an overhead outside door and people doors. They are joined to the main building by a 3' people door opening. The Eastern half of the main building is presently used for large machinery storage and display. A frame partition with a walkway through it separtes this from the Westerly half. In this Western half there are framed mexxanine floors providing additional display space. This half of the building presently houses many smaller artifacts, mostly in showcases. In this area and under the South mezzanine are the general office, the computer office and a small coffe room for the volunteers. Site preparation for this bilding was done by SHAS members. The entire building of 8560 sq. ft., its supply and erection was contracted for at $115,000 and paid for by a specific grant for this purpose through the BC Lottery Fund. It was completed and was officially opened on June 21st 1980 by Mr. Hugh Curtis, Minister of Finance and Saanich MLA at that time.
