Transitional Smoothing PlaneEntry/Object ID
2010.057.222Description
Combining the adjustability of a metal plane with the traditional feel of a wooden base, these "transitional" planes were designed to convert tradesmen from wood planes to metal. In fact they remained very popular in their own right and were manufactured for well over 50 years.Use
Final smoothing of a board surface.Context
Wooden planes, if one can learn to adjust them, have a unique feel of gliding over a wood surface, all the energy feels to be going into the cut. By contrast, metal planes can feel quite "sticky" between the wood and the sole, heavier, and harder to push. But the adjustment of the cutter is far easier. This type of plane has much of the virtues of both. This model, with its rounded back is especially comfortable to use.
