Theresa Knowlson (1897-2000) created the Corn Husk Doll Collection covering 200 years of fashion. She hand made each unique doll by first forming an armature of wire and covering it with papier mache. Each 'skeleton' included delicate features covered in up to 13 layers of paint. Once the figure was ready she added intricate period fashions. She soaked corn husks in water and glycerin until soft and then dyed and draped them on the figure while still damp. Finishing details were added using beads, lace, paint, and embroidery thread etc.
Theresa Knowlson, a former dressmaker, created the dolls beginning at age 85 and was in her late 90's when she completed the collection.
