Gritzner & Company treadle sewing machine in cabinet, serial # 883761. Manufactured in Germany c. 1884.Context
While the dating of these machines is not exact, an advertisement from 1884 depicts almost the exact same machine as is presented here at the museum. The Serial number would suggest as well that this machine dates to that early period in the company's existence from 1872-1890.
Gritzner & Co were one of the big names of their time. This German company, which began in 1872 and lasted until 1965, employed almost a hundred people by it's second year of production which, by 1905 had risen to 3,000 workers.
