Henry and Adelaide Simpson purchased 300 acres on the Saanich Peninsula in 1858. They built a farm, and later added an inn called the Prairie Tavern. The building was an important community meeting place, and a village grew up around it. The original building was replaced in 1893 with the structure that stands today at the corner of East Saanich Rd. and Mt. Newton Cross Rd.
