Portable, hand crank powered Singer sewing machine. Sphinx design. Model 27 serial # H1001472Context
This machine shows quite beautifully an execution of Egyptomania. Contrary to popular belief, the obsession with the ancient golden artifacts of Egyptian Royalty is not fixed around the rediscovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922. It could be dated back to the Classical Era, but during the Edwardian Period (when this machine dates to), those in the Western world were still very much in the throngs of Egyptomania, between two peaks of the craze, one being between the 1870s-1880s and the other being from 1922 until WW2.
