Portable, electric powered Singer sewing machine in wooden case. Serial # Y7438999 c. 1929Context
1929 marks the beginning of the Great Depression. On October 29th, 1929, there was the Wallstreet Crash, otherwise known as Black Tuesday, in which over 850,000 shares were dumped as well as 16 key Canadian stocks falling $1 for every minute that passed. The Crash was a symptom of the Depression, not the singular cause as is sometimes thought. As with the other Depression-Era machine in the collection, this machine is in excellent condition, meaning it either was used with the utmost care or it saw very little use during its time.
