A pattern specifically made and used by boat and shipbuilders, this was known as a mast plane or spar plane.
Use
This was very specifically for rounding masts or spars for sailboats or ships. The mouth is very wide, so the plane would be used to take thick shavings, a quick, rough shaping rather than fine finishing. The lack of a backing iron points to the same conclusion.
