Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1845. A 2-story portico with Tower of the Winds Corinthian columns came down in the earthquake of 1886, leaving the front of this large house with an arcaded stucco base and a simple pedimented gable. The original builder, William Ravenel, owner of one of Charleston's major steamship lines and brother of John Ravenel of 5 East Battery, completed this house by the mid-1840s. Held until the 1930s by the Ravenel family, who also owned Farmfield Plantation west of the Ashley River, the townhouse has only been occupied by only 2 other families. An exceptionally large drawing room extends across the front of the building. The significant complex of rear dependencies survives. File contains newspaper articles. 1978 News and Courier (missing columns) and 2026 Post and Courier (columns being replaced). Two Facebook posts by local photographers (Ken Bowman and Brandon Coffey) documenting the replacement of the columns, both from the beginning of June 2026. Excerpts from "60 Famous Houses" and "62 Famous Houses" on Media link. The pictures of D. Lopez signature on original timbers are from the Moby Marks renovation. HCF staff toured the home in the beginning stages of the refurbishment and took some photos.
