Photocopy provided to SC Historical Society, 10/4/2005; SC State Museum, 10/14/2005; and Naval Historical Society, 10/14/2005. Source data in Library of Congress Authority record states that this ship, a second class battleship, was the 1st of the name; laid down 1889 at Portsmouth, Va., comm. 1895; N. Atlantic Squadron in Spanish Amer. War, off Cuba; served as flagship of Coast Squadron until 1905; by 1908 had become stationary ship at Charleston, S.C.; in 1911 name changed to San Marcos [no publs. in LC data base] to allow name Texas to be assigned to Battleship No. 35; struck from Navy list in 1911 and used as a target in the Chesapeake Bay). Info from Fritz Hamer, SC State Museum: The Texas here is the first battleship built by the US Navy in 1889 or 1890. It saw action in the Spanish American War off Santiago, Cuba (1898). Later it was the station ship for the CNY from 1908 until 1911 when it was struck from the Navy list and a new battleship took its name. This picture has some important relationship with the early Navy Yard.
