Notes: Emails - Emmons to Mrs. Christensen: From: Emmons, Karen Sent: Monday, September 20, 2010 9:35 AM To: 'Martha Christensen' Subject: RE: Mr Middleton (Genalogy Research) Hi Martha, I am almost 100% certain that the photo is of Nathaniel Russell Middleton. Not only did I compare it to a photocopy of a sketch of him (attached) but he is the Middleton family member associated with 22 South Battery. (The sketch appears in An Architectural and Historical Analysis of the Nathaniel Russell House, vol. 4, by Orlando Ridout and Willie Graham.) About 22 South Battery, from The Buildings of Charleston by Jonathan Poston: 22/24 SOUTH BATTERY, NATHANIEL RUSSELL MIDDLETON HOUSE. Constructed 1857-58. Nathaniel Russell Middleton who served as city treasurer and later as president of the College of Charleston, built the substantial 3½ story house at 22 South Battery in 1857-58 after demolishing a portion of an eighteenth century double tenement on the site. Middleton, the grandson of wealthy merchant Nathaniel Russell, married Anne DeWolfe of Bristol, Rhode Island. This brick house is fronted by a three story piazza with fluted Doric columns on the first floor and fluted Corinthian columns on the upper stories. Each window on the second and third floors of the piazza opens through transomed French doors. The elegant second-floor double drawing rooms retain their original plasterwork and are reached via an impressive side staircase. There was extensive earthquake damage in 1886, and Middleton's detailed specifications for repair work to the South Battery house still survives. The house at 24 South Battery retains much of its original late-eighteenth century features as well as some Victorian period decorative painting. Photographs of the house are in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Collection: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/SC0875/ I will send the photo to my coworkers at the NRH for confirmation but if you don't hear from me otherwise, my identification is correct. Good luck with your genealogical research and thank you for contacting Historic Charleston Foundation! His mother Charlotte Swayne Christensen has given me a old photo and I'm not sure which Mr. Middleton it is. It either Arhur Middleton b 1-18-1785 and d. 1-25-1837 or Nathaniel Russell Middleton b 4-1-1810 d. 9-6-1890 or it's my mother-n-law's great grandfather Arthur Middleton. b. 12-28-1932 d. 1-4-1910. The back of the photo says: Mr Middleton, South Carolina 22 South Battery Charleston. I thought you might be able to match it up with someone in the Russell House. When going thru some old boxes at my mother-n-law's house I have discovered a bunch of old letters from Alicia Hopton Russell. I'm trying to get a hold of everything that I possibly can so I scan it into the computer for a digital back up. Karen Taylor, Char Christensen and myself were there for the family reunion last summer and I have been wanting to come back again and take pictures of the genalogy line in the back hallway at the Russell house. I have a better understanding now the family line works and I would like to compare. If you can ID the attached photo, please let me know. Thank you for your help. Please see photo below. Martha D.
