Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1820. Two-story frame dwelling, originally a single pile dwelling with center passage plan. The house was expanded soon after its construction with a rear, 2-story addition. During the middle decades of the 19th century, Martha E. Rogers, an African-American woman, operated a boarding house there. Three folders containing: documentation of the covenant and related correspondence; annual inspection reports and related correspondence; documents related to the restoration and rehabilitation of the property, including Project Manual for 18 Amherst Street (2 vols., pdf only); envelope containing samples of ceiling finishes; house history and history of buildings conveyed to Charleston (affordable housing), including this property; house history from Vernacular Architecture of Charleston and the Lowcountry; historical/research information; graduate student report (Diana Inthavong, 2016) on the history of the building/property (includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation); property research including copies deeds, Sanborn maps, plat, and other historical information; newspaper article; photocopies of photographs of the property; miscellaneous correspondence; documentation of the sale of the property to Historic Charleston Foundation.
