Scope and Content

Francis Nelson, a ship's carpenter, built this house after acquiring it from Mary Middleton in 1799. It is the oldest of the 3 remaining houses of the post-Revolutionary period on this street. Alexander Street is a/k/a Middle Street (Poston, Buildings of Charleston). File contains: house history (undated, stamped Fort Sumter Realty Co.); newspaper article, 2/20/1978, "6 Alexander St. House Dates to Early 1800s"; photocopy of photo of the northeast corner of 6 Alexander Street (Laurens and Alexander).
