Francis Nelson, a ship's carpenter, built this house after acquiring it from Mary Middleton in 1799. It is the oldest of the 3 remaining houses of the post-Revolutionary period on this street. Alexander Street is a/k/a Middle Street (Poston, Buildings of Charleston).
