KING.054.001Scope and Content
Constructed between 1768-1777, renovated w/ addition 1994. 3-story single house. Detailing of the main house supports the 18th century construction date, although the piazza appears to post-date the construction by several decades. Recent renovations/repairs include new hyphen addition joining main house to rear dependency.
Per 2011 FOH "Houses and Sites of the Civil War": From 1863 to 1877, the property was owned by George A. Trenholm, who lived in what is now Ashley Hall School. He was the Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederate States of America and is reputed to be a prototype for Margaret Mitchell's character Rhett Butler.
File contains letter from L. Louis Green III to Benjamin Allston Moore enclosing the historic research performed on the house by HCF; newspaper article (DYKYC); BAR application for alterations/additions; narrative house history (undated, unattributed); document entitled "Preservation of the James Brown House (circa 1768) 54 King Street" (prepared by Mrs. Maurice H. Thompson); article entitled "Adding a Hyphen and a Garden with Maze to the James Brown House" (unattributed); excerpts from "The James Brown House, 54 King Street, a History" by Robert P.
