Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1789; altered ca. 1850; restored ca. 1930. The classic Federal style Charleston single house at 64 Meeting Street stands with only small alterations from the dwelling built by Andrew Hasell, a planter in St. James, Santee, and St. Thomas parishes. Hasell acquired the site upon his marriage to Mary Milner, daughter of the Congregationalist merchant Job Milner. After his wife's death the property descended to their daughters and was sold in 1818 to Alexander England. Some alterations were made on the interior in 1850; the piazzas were probably added at that juncture, and a new hyphen addition connected the main house with the original kitchen house. Albert Simons, an architect prominent figure in Charleston's preservation history, restored the house in the late 1920s for Thomas A. Huguenin and his wife Mary Vereen Huguenin, designing a Neoclassical style door screen on the piazza. Simons's firm also assisted the Huegenins in their restoration 2 decades later of the plantation house at Halidon Hill on the Cooper River. Ropemaker's Lane, formerly Rope Lane, probably named for an early ropewalk runs to the north of this house. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property and related correspondence, including conceptual approval for specific repairs/alterations (2006); Title to Real Estate (with plat); Part I certification (National Register); IRS form 8283; annual inspection reports; request for alterations; FOHG house histories (2 undated, 1993); excerpt from book "Andrew Hasell House Garden Portion" (from Gardens of Historic Charleston); newspaper article (1978 DYKYC); Rosen and Associates partial inspection report (2006). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). (Note: unsigned and many unlabeled but appear to be documentation photographs.) No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
