Scope and Content

Mourning card with poem, in memoriam to Prince Albert. Author unknown. Back is inscribed to Hon. Wm. Aiken "With _?_ compliments of the author, January 17, 1883." Had's thou been King and death had laid thee low, Doubtless a nation would have wept thy fall. And e'en the pomp of thy funereal pall Had told how deeply Britan felt the blow. But nation's sorrows oftentimes but show. How strangely grief and gladness intertwine: Grief for the dead, but joy that in his line A larger liberty the land shall know. Not such thy fall--no selfish aims attend The bleeding hearts that sorrow o'er thy bier, No Monarch thou--but husband, father, friend. For each of these the nation owes a tear, And Albion's children mourn thy hapless fate, Which leaves the Royal bosom--desolate.
